Over the last two seasons, Mashon Lattimore has only played in 17 games for the New Orleans Saints. The star cornerback has dealt with numerous injuries that have had him sidelined, and because of that, his reputation has taken a bit of a hit. Understanding that, Lattimore entered 2024 with the goal of reminding everyone he’s the best cornerback in the NFL.

Unfortunately, Lattimore has already missed multiple days of training camp while dealing with a hip flexor injury. The issue isn’t believed to be severe, but it has kept Lattimore off the field for some important practice. However, once one door closes, another opens.

Lattimore’s absence has led to rookie cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry taking first-team reps. Considering McKinstry is in somewhat of a position battle, this is an opportunity for the rookie to make a statement. Through a couple days running with the ones, the young cornerback has done just that, showing why he was considered one of the best defensive backs in his class.

Kool-Aid McKinstry could play his way into the starting lineup

The Saints selected McKinstry in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, despite already having Lattimore and Paulson Adebo. McKinstry is a really talented corner, but he isn't expected to supplant Lattimore or Adebo as a starter during his rookie season.

Instead, the focus has been on the slot corner position, held by Alontae Taylor. Entering camp, the expectation was that those two would battle for the starting job. Although McKinstry is currently taking snaps outside, his performance could still help him win the job on the inside.

Obviously, Lattimore will get his spot back once he’s healthy. However, if McKinstry is outperforming Taylor, regardless of where the two are lined up, the coaches will have a hard time keeping the rookie defensive back off the field.
