The New Orleans Saints can’t catch a break. Injuries have quickly derailed the team’s season, and that continued on Monday night in the Week 5 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Late in the fourth quarter of the 26-13 game, quarterback Derek Carr left the game with an injury.

With the game slipping away, Carr threw a pass on 4th-and-8 and was immediately drilled by a defender. As the pass fell to the ground, so did Carr, and he grimaced while holding his side. He left the field and went straight to the blue tent on the sideline, and made his way back to the locker room shortly after that.

The team announced the veteran quarterback as questionable to return with an oblique injury. New Orleans also lost veteran safety Will Harris to a hamstring injury on Monday, and offensive lineman Lucas Patrick was temporarily sidelined but returned to the game.

Carr ultimately didn’t return to the game, with second-year quarterback Jake Haener coming in to replace him, but Monday’s game was pretty much decided at that point. The bigger concern is Carr’s availability moving forward.

After the game, Carr admitted that he still wasn’t feeling good physically, and explained the injury came from how he twisted on the throw, and not from the hit.

With New Orleans now 2-3, dropping their last three games, the season can quickly slip away if they can’t get healthy. One thing that’s known about Derek Carr, though, is his willingness to play through injury. Throughout his first season with the Saints, Carr was banged up a lot, but he found a way to start every game.

It’s safe to assume he’ll do everything he can to be on the field for New Orleans moving forward. Unfortunately for the Saints, Carr isn’t the only injured player on the team, and New Orleans’ problems extend far pass the quarterback position.
