Five Saints players were selected in UFL Draft, but their focus is on training camp
On Tuesday, New Orleans Saints rookies reported for training camp. Arriving a week before veterans, the rookies are getting ready for their first NFL camp, preparing to fight for roster spots. Already a big week for the young guys, it got even bigger for a few of the rookies.
On Wednesday, the Saints had five rookies selected in the 2024 UFL college draft. The spring football league, that recently merged the XFL and USFL, held a 10-round, 80-pick draft for players entering professional football this year. Here’s are the five Saints players that were selected.
Saints players selected in 2024 UFL Draft
Round | Player | Position | Team |
---|---|---|---|
5 | Dallin Holker | TE | Birmingham Stallions |
6 | Trajan Jeffcoat | DE | Birmingham Stallions |
7 | Sincere Haynesworth | OL | San Antonio Brahmas |
10 | Mason Tipton | WR | Memphis Showboats |
10 | Isaiah Stalbird | LB | Michigan Panthers |
All five players are undrafted free agents and will enter training camp on the roster bubble. These are typically the players selected in spring football drafts, because teams don’t want to waste picks on players that are a lock to be in the NFL; they target the fringe roster players that could be cut during training camp.
UFL teams are drafting the rights of players. They understand all of these players have NFL opportunities, and hope to make NFL rosters, but in the event any of these players decide to play spring football, the teams that drafted them will be waiting.
Out of the five players selected from New Orleans, tight end Dallin Holker has the best chance of making the regular-season roster in New Orleans. He was a priority signing, and has already been impressive in his short time with the Saints. People are expecting Holker to contribute to the Saints offense as a rookie.
For the other four players, it will be more of an uphill battle but they definitely can make the roster. The Saints have had quite a few undrafted success stories in recent years. However, even if these players don’t make the roster, they could still land on the practice squad or with another team. They’ll also have some UFL teams waiting to see if they’re going to make their way to spring football.
