It’s no secret that New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr isn’t a fan favorite. In just his second year with the team, he’s already a polarizing figure amongst the fan base. Saints fans are pretty good at making sure their voices are heard, so Carr is well aware of his standing with the fan base.

On Sunday, however, fans didn’t have a single complaint for Carr, as he led New Orleans to a dominant 47-10 win over the Carolina Panthers. The veteran quarterback finished the game 19-of-23 for 200 yards and three touchdowns. He even ran the ball for 13 yards, and lowered his shoulder on a defender, despite New Orleans having a significant lead.

That decision got Carr chewed out by head coach Dennis Allen, and the moment was caught on the broadcast. Carr confirmed that’s what Allen was sternly talking to him about, and even though the veteran QB already knew that’s something he should avoid, he saw it as a way to endear himself to the fans, so he took the opportunity.

He explained that during his postgame press conference when asked about the atmosphere in the Superdome. Carr joked that the fans liked the team on Sunday, before going on to detail how the team is doing everything in their power to show the city how much winning means to them.

Saints are trying to make their fans proud

Derek Carr expressed how the team is willing to do whatever it takes to win games and win the fans’ hearts. He understands in order to do that, the team must play up to the franchise’s established standard like they did on Sunday. When that happens, they have the full support of the fan base.

That wasn’t just evident in the stadium, but on social media as well— which happens to be the home of Carr’s toughest critics. However, as the game unfolded, fans started to question if they owed Carr an apology. Ultimately, it was just one game, but it was a step in the right direction. If Carr and the Saints can continue to deliver like they did in Week 1, the entire fan base will be behind them.
