Dallin Holker has seemingly already secured his spot on the Saints roster
Typically, training camp is a really challenging time for undrafted rookies. They usually join the team near the bottom of the depth chart, and don’t see as many opportunities as high-draft picks. Because of that, they usually have to scratch and claw all throughout training camp and the preseason just for a shot at making the roster.
That doesn’t seem to be the case for New Orleans Saints undrafted tight end Dallin Holker. The rookie certainly still has to fight to make the roster, but he seems be ahead of schedule. With the Saints a couple of weeks into training camp, Holker is already taking reps with the starters.

This is partly due to the fact starting tight end Juwan Johnson is still sidelined after an offseason foot procedure. However, Holker did enter camp with high expectations, and he has already stood out, despite other veteran tight ends on the roster.
Holker’s impressive offseason started back in OTAs, with the rookie consistently flashing, and that has continued in camp. What has really stood out, according to head coach Dennis Allen, is Holker’s IQ.
"He’s got football awareness and football intelligence. That allows him to find soft spots in zones and things of that nature. He’s really good when the picture changes. For a young guy, to be advanced in that way from a football intelligence standpoint, is pretty impressive."

The mental aspect is an extremely important part of the game, and it’s often where most young players struggle. Holker being advanced, according to his head coach, is certainly the reason he’s able to get reps with the starters.
The rookie will continue to be tested throughout the duration of camp. As things start to heat up with joint practices and preseason games, Holker must continue to prove himself. If he can, he’ll have a role for the Saints offense once the season arrives.
