3 reasons fans should believe the Saints can be serious contenders in 2024
Yes, it was just one game. Sure, it was against the sorry Carolina Panthers. We know, it’s a lot of football left to be played. Still, the New Orleans Saints have already given fans reasons to believe they can contend for a title this season. It may be irresponsible for the team to start thinking that far ahead, but surely fans can have some fun and be blissfully optimistic.
The Saints had the best Week 1 performance of any team, defeating the Panthers 47-10. It was a complete game by New Orleans, as the team dominated every phase of the game. Now, the team must build and deliver consistent performances like this, because the Saints clearly have the tools to be competitive.
3. Saints can run the football
Since arriving in New Orleans, Klint Kubiak has said the offense will run the football. Everyone believed the Saints had the perfect running back for Kubiak’s system in Alvin Kamara, and the franchise made sure to go get Taliese Fuaga, who was an elite run blocker in college. In Week 1, everything came together for an elite rushing attack.
As a team, New Orleans ran the ball 37 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns— that’s 4.9 yards a carry. Kamara led the way with 15 carries for 83 yards and one touchdown. If the Saints can consistently run the ball like this, it will keep the entire offense rolling, helping the unit put up a lot of points.
2. Saints can take the ball away
Early in training camp, New Orleans’ offense was turning the ball over a lot. Klint Kubiak admitted they needed to be better, but he also reminded everyone the offense has the challenge of going up against one of the best ball-hawking defenses every day.
That was on display in Sunday’s game, as the Saints defense forced three turnovers. All three takeaways came from the safety group. Will Harris and Jordan Howden each recorded interceptions, and Tyrann Mathieu forced and recovered a fumble.
The turnover battle is often the key to wins and losses, and a defense that can consistently take the ball away makes the entire team’s life easier. If New Orleans keeps forcing turnovers, the team will win a lot of games.
1. Blake Grupe has seemingly improved
Kicker Blake Grupe struggled at the end of his rookie season last year, and as a result, New Orleans brought in some competition this offseason to push him. Signing rookie Charlie Smyth, Grupe was in a competition throughout training camp but he proved himself as the most consistent kicker.
That dependability was on display during Sunday’s game as Grupe went 4-of-4 on field goals and 5-of-5 on extra points. His field goals came from 57 yards, 44 yards, 52 yards, and 39 yards, showcasing really good range.
In the NFL, a lot of games come down to field goals, especially late in the year and in the postseason. The teams with a reliable kicker have an advantage in those games. Grupe is trying to prove he’s that advantage for the Saints.
