NFL analyst predicts that 2025 free agency will be surprisingly kind to the Saints

The New Orleans Saints have some tough tasks to complete this offseason, but navigating free agency isn’t expected to be one.

The New Orleans Saints recently hired Kellen Moore, giving him his first head coaching job, and he has a tough task on his hands. The Saints haven’t made the postseason in four years, and they have an aging roster with the worst cap space in the league. For New Orleans to quickly turn things around under Moore, the team needs to make all the right moves this offseason.

The two major opportunities for teams to improve in the offseason are the draft and free agency. The Saints have a good amount of picks in the 2025 Draft, including the No. 9 overall selection, so they could put together a nice class. Free agency, on the other hand, could be more complicated.

Between New Orleans’ lack of cap space, and the team not being considered a contender, it could be hard for the Saints to attract and retain top players. However, that doesn’t mean that free agency this offseason will be brutal for the team.

Matt Okada, in a recent piece for NFL.com, named the six teams that will be hit the hardest by free agency in 2025. The Saints were named as an honorable mention, but Okada mapped out a surprisingly kind free agency for New Orleans.

"The Saints currently sit a monstrous $54.1 million over the cap for 2025 (worst in the league), leaving very little wiggle room for improvement this offseason. They have plenty of needs, too. The good news -- and the reason they remain an honorable mention selection -- is that they’re not set to lose all that much with impending free agents. Chase Young, Will Harris and Juwan Johnson are the most notable names, and that’s not exactly an All-Pro hit list."

Saints aren’t expected to lose many free agents in 2025

Okada brings up a fair point. New Orleans will have 19 total free agents, but there aren’t many big names in the group, aside from the three he listed, and Paulson Adebo. Even then, the Saints will probably re-sign everyone from that group except Chase Young.

So New Orleans won’t lose a ton of big names in free agency, but the problem is the franchise likely won’t add any stars either. However, the veteran core will still be in place— unless they’re moved this offseason —and Kellen Moore will have that to work with.
