New trade target emerges amidst Saints' injury chaos
By Ryan Heckman
With the New Orleans Saints heading in the wrong direction, there are many issues which need addressing at the moment. After a 2-0 start, things have started to unravel.
One of the biggest worries, right now, for the Saints, is the fact that they are in the midst of some serious injury woes. The team goes into Thursday Night Football without their starting quarterback, Derek Carr, and without their top two pass catchers in Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed.
Olave suffered a concussion in the Saints' Week 6 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers while Shaheed is dealing with a knee injury that appears to be very concerning. News recently broke that could mean his season is over.
Now, it will be rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler getting his second career start and throwing passes to Bub Means, Mason Tipton and Cedrick Wilson as his top three options at wide receiver.
The good news, however, is the fact that the trade market is heating up. With the NFL trade deadline coming on November 5, a handful of notable moves have already been made this week with the likes of Davante Adams heading to the New York Jets and Amari Cooper getting dealt to the Buffalo Bills.
One of those moves, particularly, could have a significant impact on the Saints.
More Saints news:
With Adams being traded to the Jets, that left an odd man out of the action. Adams, Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard will be Aaron Rodgers' top three wideouts, meaning Mike Williams is headed for less playing time.
Or... he's headed out of New York, altogether. The Jets reportedly made Williams available via trade, after the Adams deal, and already the Saints are involved.
Mike Williams won't solve all the Saints' problems, but it's a start
If the Saints can somehow come away with a victory on Thursday night, they'd be sitting at 3-4, which is far from a death sentence. There are plenty of games left, for the Saints, and hanging on for dear life is the name of the game right now.
If New Orleans dealt for Williams, and get Carr (plus Olave, at the very least) back in the next few weeks, they'd have an opportunity to still compete for a wild card spot. Three of their next five games include matchups against the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns and L.A Rams. All of those are very winnable games and could keep New Orleans in the thick of things.
Williams is only part of the equation, though. Olave needs to get healthy. Carr needs to get healthy. Rattler has to be baptized by fire and come out the other end with a couple of victories.
At the very least, Williams would give the Saints a big body who can beat defenders on deep passes. Without Shaheed, that's something this offense will be missing.
