The New Orleans Saints made headlines on Thursday, July 30 by extending wide receiver Chris Olave to a massive four-year, $132 million contract. With him secured for the foreseeable future, the front office’s focus shifts to the next player who will be demanding a hefty contract: cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. With this in mind, McKinstry’s performance in 2026 could have serious implications for next offseason.
The Saints drafted McKinstry in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Shortly after, he signed a four-year deal with the Saints, the standard length for a day-two selection. However, since he wasn’t a first-round pick, he doesn't have a fifth-year option. Meaning, he will enter the final year of his deal before 2027.
Most players in this position are looking for an extension before the year. As a result, the Saints could be in the same position they were in for next season. However, like Olave, a major contract would be worth it if McKinstry establishes himself as a franchise cornerstone this year.
An elite season from Kool-Aid McKinstry will make his price skyrocket.
McKinstry’s biggest issue in the NFL has been his consistency. At times, he’s looked like a shutdown cornerback capable of making an All-Pro team. Unfortunately, he’s also had lapses where he struggles immensely and gives up game-changing plays. Fortunately for the Saints, he improved tremendously towards the end of the year and is riding high off an amazing offseason.
There’s no chance Brandon Staley lets McKinstry hit the open market if he impresses in 2026, regardless of the price. Because of this, a stellar season could dramatically improve his annual average value and force the Saints to invest heavily in him.
It’s still way too early to try and predict McKinstry’s contract next offseason. All it takes is one player to get a lucrative deal and reset the market. However, he’s in line for a massive payday next year if he impresses during 2026 and solidifies himself as the future lockdown cornerback. Don’t be shocked to start hearing rumors of this next offseason.
