Kool-Aid McKinstry is under massive internal and external pressure this season. He obviously wants to see things start to truly come together in his third season for himself and the 2026 New Orleans Saints defense, but there’s also the pending threat of next year's draft class. On top of all that, McKinstry has to face a gauntlet of talented receivers in this crucial season.
It can sometimes be unfair to continuously throw the upcoming draft class in the mix, but other times it's completely valid. It was fair to do that to Tyler Shough last year because we knew there was a good chance the Saints could target a quarterback if he didn't perform. The same could be said for cornerback after all of the offensive additions the front office made this offseason.
McKinstry won't be looking that far ahead, but the route to stopping the Saints from investing high in a rookie corner is for him to put it all together this season. That objective was already priority no. 1 and revolves around consistency. It's going to be difficult to find that consistency with the line of wide receivers McKinstry will have to face.
WR gauntlet is the biggest obstacle to Saints getting the Kool-Aid McKinstry they need
LouisianaSports.Net's Ross Jackson laid out the list of wide receivers the Saints will have to face in 2026. It isn't the most enviable list of receivers.
To just keep it at the best of the list, the Saints have to face the Minnesota Vikings and Cincinatti Bengals. That means Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase. It's hard to predict where Malik Nabers will be in his recovery, but that could be a big matchup.
McKinstry also has to face DK Metcalf as well as occasionally Amon-Ra St. Brown when he steps out of the slot. Within the division, Drake London and Tetairoa McMillan are waiting for McKinstry.
In fairness, the Saints corners play sides, so McKinstry won't have to follow these receivers or go toe to toe with them every play. That doesn't make it much easier. That's especially true versus the Bengals where it's Chase or Tee Higgins.
McKinstry needs a big year for himself, and the Saints defense needs him to have a big year for the unit to come close to his peak. If he's able to succeed, there won't be many questions about what type of corner is McKinstry. He'll need to play at a high level consistently to find success in 2026.
The cornerback has shown the flashes throughout his career and began to piece it together at the end of 2025. In the simplest terms, McKinstry needs to perform all season how he did at the end of last year. If he does, we're talking about him in a much different light
