Kevin Harlan’s radio call of Khalen Saunders INT off Patrick Mahomes is absolutely iconic
By Ryan Heckman
In capping off Week 5 on Monday Night Football, the New Orleans Saints traveled to take on the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs. The Saints were unable to come away with a victory, but there were still a few bright moments for this team.
Whether it was yet another beautiful, deep touchdown reception by Rashid Shaheed or what could go down as an iconic interception off Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, fans had plenty to cheer about despite the loss.
Speaking of said iconic interception off the arm of Mahomes, it was former Chiefs defensive lineman Khalen Saunders to come away with the big moment on Monday night.
Inside the red zone, later in the third quarter, Mahomes dropped back to pass and targeted JuJu Smith-Schuster. The ball ended up being tipped in the air and landed into the hands of Saunders, who wasted zero time proceeding to rumble down the field in the opposite direction.
The play was absolutely incredible. But, the radio call from Kevin Harlan?
That was the stuff of legends.
Not only was the actual play and radio call a blast to watch and listen to, but the aftermath gave fans one of the more spectacular factoids in recent memory.
That big man was moving fast! What an athlete.
The Saints couldn't quite finish the job after Saunders flipped the momentum
Right after the Saunders pick, New Orleans drove down the field and saw Derek Carr throw a touchdown pass to Foster Moreau to bring the Saints within three. The momentum had officially shifted ... and then, Blake Grupe missed the point after attempt.
Things went from hopeful to dim, once again, in a hurry.
More Saints news:
The Chiefs proceeded to take their next possession, go down and score thanks to a massive, 50-yard pass play from Mahomes to Smith-Schuster, followed by a touchdown run from the rookie wideout, Xavier Worthy.
It was disappointing, to say the least. The Saints had momentum on their side, on the road, thanks to a huge play from Saunders.
Even in the loss, Saunders' pick had to be a genuine feel-good moment. After he was drafted by Kansas City and spent four seasons there, Saunders had become a fan favorite and a favorite in the locker room. But, he'd go on to sign a three-year deal with the Saints.
You had better believe there were plenty of talking points after the game between Saunders and some of his former teammates. Even in a loss, a play like that was worth celebrating and revisiting.
Next up, the Saints get a divisional tilt with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and hope to stop the bleeding of this three-game skid.
