A lot has been said about New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough this past offseason, but perhaps no one has had more exciting things to say than his left tackle, Kelvin Banks Jr. Following the joint practice against the Los Angeles Rams, his blindside blocker said that he sees him as a leader.
Banks Jr. was very matter-of-fact about it. "I see a guy who can pick his team up no matter if we just made a bad play, a big play, or a small play, just different things like that," he said to the media. "I see a guy who's ready to go to war no matter the circumstance. He's doing a great job for us."
This isn't the first time Shough's leadership skills have been praised by teammates. So what this comment actually does is prove something that the fans and media have already known or been suspicious of: The Saints have a true leader with Shough and a possible future face of the franchise, at that.
Saints QB Tyler Shough hasn't just impressed off the field
At this point, a big C being stitched onto Tyler Shough's jersey seems inevitable. However, he's stood out on the field as much as he has off the field these past few months.
Shough's bounce back from the defenses' early offseason dominance was impressive enough, but what really got some hype going again was his performance commanding the offense in the trio of joint practices.
Dominating against the Jaguars, fighting through the chaos that was the Cowboys practice, and surviving that Rams defense, Shough is showing that he's not the same QB as last year. In fact, he just might be better.
Although it's still too early to tell for sure, Saints fans and media will likely have to wait just a little bit longer to see if Shough's offseason hype can translate to the field. Per head coach Kellen Moore, the starters are expected to get most of their reps in the joint practices, rather than the preseason games. Should that continue to be the case, Shough won't see the field until mid-September.
