The New Orleans Saints’ week six matchup against the New York Giants is more than just a game; it’s an opportunity to make a statement. Falling back into a win isn’t enough. They need to show drastic improvement and dominate, or else Kellen Moore’s job is in jeopardy.
Moore is already in the hot seat. Owner Gayle Benson made this clear with her statement last week at the Greater New Orleans QB Club meeting. She emphasized that the process isn’t working and that changes will happen if nothing changes.
“We are 1–4. That is not acceptable to me, and it falls short of what our fans truly deserve. I hear the frustration directed toward our team and our organization. It is not lost on me,” Benson said. “Our fans invest their time and their hearts in the Saints. They are right to expect more than we have delivered.”
A win against the Giants isn’t enough for Kellen Moore.
Moore dug himself into a hole with the fanbase, especially with the high expectations entering the season. As a result, scraping out a win when the Saints start slowly isn’t enough. They must fix their recurring issues and produce a statement win.
The Giants are a solid team, as their 3-1-1 record indicates; however, they are beatable. Jameis Winston leads a gunslinging offense, as any Saints fan knows, which poses a threat, but also an opportunity for a struggling defense. They have to limit explosive moments and capitalize on turnover-worthy plays.
On offense, the main battle is in the trenches. Even without Brian Burns (injured reserve), New York has a dynamic pass rush headlined by top-five picks Abdul Carter and Arvell Reese. Don’t expect the offensive line to be perfect, but they must contain the pressure and give Tyler Shough time to operate.
These are some of the main on-field matchups, but the most important factor is Kellen Moore’s game plan. As aforementioned, Kellen Moore can’t start slow and must fix the recurring issues. However, his ability to adjust mid-game, which he’s struggled with, against an experienced head coach like John Harbaugh will be a deciding element.
If Moore disappoints, then the game will be viewed negatively, even in a win. The hot-seat talk will continue to rise, and we’ll be in the same situation next week. Luckily for Kellen Moore, he’s got a golden opportunity against the Giants to make a statement and get the season back on track.
