The New Orleans Saints face arguably the NFL’s premier rising defensive star in the New York Giants rookie linebacker, Arvell Reese. The fifth-overall pick’s athleticism, versatility, and three-down impact make him a dangerous threat that Kellen Moore’s offense must contain. Stopping him is the key to a bounceback victory for the Saints.

Reese wasted no time in the NFL and made an immediate impact. He leads the Giants in tackles with 43, including four TFL’s. He’s also tallied four pass breakups, one interception, and one sack. He’s transformed New York’s defense and is a major reason for their 4-1 record.

The Giants have other defensive stars, including 2025 third overall pick Abdul Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Jevon Holland. These players are impactful, but Reese’s versatility makes him the biggest threat. The Saints must stop him.

Tyler Shough must identify Arvell Reese before each play.

As mentioned, Reese lines up everywhere for New York. He’s listed as a linebacker, but moves frequently to the defensive line and slot depending on the defense. He attacks mismatches and forces mental errors by quarterbacks. Don’t be surprised to see him lining up opposite of left tackle Asim Richards, especially in obvious passing downs.

Reese’s otherworldly athleticism helps him wreak havoc anywhere on the field. He matches up well with tight ends or running backs in man coverage, using his combination of size and quickness to win in coverage. Additionally, he’s stellar against the run, battling bigger offensive linemen with his leverage and staggering strength.

Despite this, he’s more dangerous rushing the passer. He has a lightning-quick first step, instantly threatening the tackle’s outside shoulder. Then, his refinement as a pass rusher, with an arsenal of pass-rush moves, helps him seamlessly penetrate the backfield.

These traits make him a game-ending threat for the Saints. Tyler Shough must identify him pre-snap and either shift the blocks towards him or understand his assignment in coverage. This is the difference between containing Reese and allowing him to run wild.

As with any star, don’t expect Reese to be silent. He’s going to make plays, especially with the questions on the Saints' offensive line. What they can’t allow is timely plays on third or fourth downs or game-altering moments (fumbles, interceptions, etc.).

He’s only a rookie, but Arvell Reese is already making his presence felt. The Saints must contain him to achieve a bounce-back win and get their season back on track.
