Jeremiah Wright is the epitome of a future investment for the New Orleans Saints. It’s unlikely he makes it past Cesar Ruiz and/or Dillon Radunz on the depth chart this season. The fourth round pick still a prospect to watch, however, and the first day of padded practice proved why.
It’s only so much judging you can do on the trenches without pads anyway, but Wright is the type of player you truly have to wait until the pads come on to see who he really is. Kellen Moore described the lineman as, “a physical physical football player,” so it should come as no surprise that Wright was a standout in training camp’s first padded practice.
Ruiz was excused from practice because of the birth of his child, so Radunz took all the first team reps. Wright also took a step up, securing all the second team snaps while also continuing to work with the third team as normal. That extra work and elevated completion is great for his early development
Development is the key for Saints G Jeremiah Wright
As we mentioned early, it's going to be hard for Wright to get on the field as a rookie because Ruiz and Radunz are ahead of them. Because of that, it's more about development throughout the season to be potentially ready for 2027.
We'll hear less about Wright's development once we get into the regular season. That's why the preseason and training camp is his time to shine. Non-starters get more reps in practice, and they'll get the bulk of the preseason game snaps.
The team will be able to watch his development throughout the season, but this is the fans opportunity to see it and hear it discussed, which won't happen during the season. NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill recently wrote, "Jeremiah Wright also held up well during his opportunities and looked strong enough that he became significantly more intriguing to me."
That's the type of impact you want out of Wright. It's early, so fans shouldn't expect him be mauling everyone in the interior defensive line. It's about starting points, and Underhill saying Wright became significantly more intriguing after one day in pads is as encouraging as you can get.
The earlier Wright shows flashes of why the Saints made the investment, the better it is for the fan base. He's been crowned as the eventual starting right guard. While that's unlikely to be this year, unless a lot goes wrong, Wright could be right on track if he continues to develop this quickly.
