Ruiz has been the starter since being drafted 24th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, his career has been defined by his inconsistencies, leaving his long-term future in jeopardy. As a result, Wright is his replacement and he could take over much sooner than expected, potentially in the regular season opener.
The Saints’ picking Wright on day three was heavily speculated. He’s met with the team multiple times this offseason: a top-30 visit, breakfast before his pro day, and the Senior Bowl. They didn’t hide their interest in Wright, which means they are extremely high on his potential.

Wright needs refinement as a pass blocker, but the tools are evident. He’s an amazing athlete and has smooth footwork, which keeps him ahead of defenders. Additionally, he has a superb anchor and mitigates the threat of a bull rush. Wright’s punch timing and accuracy need work, but that can be fixed with NFL-level coaching.
Overall, the Saints adding Jeremiah Wright shouldn’t be a surprise. His prowess as a run blocker and potential in pass protection make him an enticing long-term answer at right guard. It's a matter of when, not if, Wright steps into the starting lineup. He has the chance to compete with veteran Cesar Ruiz and be the week-one starter for Kellen Moore’s offense.
