Jaxson Dart went down with a knee injury on Monday Night Football that now appears to be potentially season ending. Even if he is able to return this year, it'll keep Dart out long enough to miss the New Orleans Saints' Week 6 matchup with the New York Giants. That means another year of Tyler Shough vs Jaxson Dart eluding fans.
It does, however, set the stage for a Jameis Winston revenge game. If Monday night was any indication, there will be no revenge happening for Winston when he plays the Saints. It flat out didn't look good, and he looked out of sync.
Part of that has to do with the lack or reps, but we've seen Winston look better than that in similar situations before. Even if things start getting a bit smoother, the Saints have a much easier game on their hands with Winston pulling the trigger than if Dart played.
Fans will have to wait another year see Tyler Shough vs Jaxson Dart
There’s an ongoing debate of who is the best quarterback from last year’s draft, and Dart and Shough are the two most frequent contenders. Cam Ward’s struggles in Tennessee have left him out of these conversations. Shough owns the head to head win over Ward, but the opportunity for Shough to play Dart has been elusive in these two games.
Shough had the better season, while many believe Dart has a higher upside talent wise. These types of debates are often “settled” by a head to head matchups. The two were drafted in the same year and have had two chances to square off, but it hasn’t happened.
The Saints played the Giants last year, and it was an ugly game for Dart and the Giants offense. Dart was responsible for 3 turnovers, two interceptions and fumble. The Saints defense forced turnovers on five straight possessions, and any time you do that, victory should be yours.
Victorious the Saints were, but Spencer Rattler was the starting quarterback. It was his one and only win as the Saints starting quarterback, leaving Dart 0-1 vs the Saints but still 0-0 against Shough.
We should get the showdown between the young quarterbacks in 2027. The Saints and Giants are set to face each other once again for the fifth year in a row. The NFC South plays the NFC East next year, and the schedule makers may have to make this game the season opener.
In 2025, Shough sitting to start the year made the game too early in the season. In 2026, Dart’s injury made the game too late, and it’s scheduled just six games into the season. The only solution is making it Week 1 to ensure all parties can be involved.
In all seriousness, Shough vs Dart is something fans deserve to see. Fans of each team want to have bragging rights, and fans of the league deserve to watch a showdown between two quarterbacks that could become rising stars in the league.
