The New Orleans Saints face a familiar foe in New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston in week six. Despite not starting the season, Winston’s aggressive playstyle is dangerous for a struggling Saints’ defense. However, it’s also a golden opportunity that they must take advantage of.
Winston was vaulted into action in week two after Jaxson Dart’s season-ending injury. So far, he’s had a tumultuous season, the prototypical Jameis experience, but is coming off his best performance against the Washington Commanders. Despite a tie, he threw for 326 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions, showing that he can lead an offense.
As fans know, Winston spent four years in New Orleans before signing elsewhere. He only started 10 games because of injuries, but he still has a strong connection to the franchise. Therefore, the team and fans know what they’re about to face: an aggressive quarterback capable of taking the top off a defense.
Jameis Winston’s gunslinger mentality threatens the Saints’ defense… but also gives them hope.
On one hand, Jameis Winston’s aggressive, gunslinger mentality is dangerous, potentially leading to a blowout. The Saints’ secondary has struggled in 2026, being unable to cover receivers downfield. Opposing quarterbacks have exploited this, running efficient, explosive offenses.
If nothing changes, Winston will light up Brandon Staley’s defense for 300 yards. His elite arm and the Giants’ receivers, Malik Nabers and Darnell Mooney, will dominate an uninspiring secondary. Particularly if the Saints’ pass rush can’t provide consistent pressure.
But that doesn’t have to be the story.
On the contrary, Winston’s been turnover-prone his entire career. He’s already thrown three interceptions in his four games of 2026, including two against the Arizona Cardinals. This is something the secondary must capitalize on.
Obviously, the Saints have been unable to create interceptions thus far. The only interception they had this year was at the end of the game in a Ravens' comeback attempt, and they haven’t shown improvement. However, that can change if they’re opportunistic and finish plays.
With this mindset, this matchup could be the turning point of the season. On the one hand, it could be the final nail and further demoralize the fanbase. Conversely, it could be the start of something new and reinvigorate the defense IF they can capitalize.
We’ll get more clarity about the Saints after this game. Not only on Kellen Moore, Brandon Staley, or the defense, but also on their competitive spirit and potential. The turnaround must start here, and that begins with a dangerous, albeit promising, matchup with Jameis Winston.
