History shows Saints' season may already be decided after a three-game losing streak

The New Orleans Saints are currently on a three-game losing streak, and historically, that’s not usually a good thing.

The New Orleans Saints are entering Week 6 at 2-3, with a three-game losing streak. The team is falling apart health wise, and New Orleans just isn’t playing good football. Despite the bleak reality of the team right now, some fans are trying to stay optimistic by reminding themselves it’s a lot of football left this season.

That is true. There are 13 more weeks left in the regular season, and the Saints have 12 more guaranteed games. They could absolutely get things turned around and make the playoffs. While it’s possible, the odds aren’t on New Orleans’ side, and neither is history.

The Saints lost their last three games, which means they’re on a three-game losing streak. In recent history, when the Saints have a three-game losing streak at any point in the regular season, they don’t make the playoffs.

Saints’ playoff hopes don’t look good with three-game losing streak

Saints reporter Jeff Nowak pointed this out, looking at seasons dating back to 2014. In the 10 years prior to this season, New Orleans had six seasons with a three-game losing streak; the team didn’t go to the playoffs in any of those seasons.

In the three seasons from 2014 to 2016, the Saints finished 7-9 each year, and in 2021 and 2023 they were 9-8, and 7-10 in 2022. Now, New Orleans is 2-3 through five games, and trying to change the trend.

Ultimately, history is just that: history. Just because the Saints couldn’t overcome three-game losing streaks in the past doesn’t mean they won’t be able to overcome one this year.

New Orleans also scored 91 combined points in the first two weeks of the season, and the only other teams who scored 91 or more points in the first two weeks of a season are Super Bowl champions. Accomplishing that didn’t guarantee the Saints a Super Bowl, so a three-game losing streak isn’t a guarantee the team will miss the playoffs. The games still have to be played.
