Last week, I spoke to former New Orleans Saints quarterback and 14-year NFL veteran Chase Daniels for his upcoming Cheez-Itz Couch Committee campaign. During it, he spoke highly of quarterback Tyler Shough and made one thing evident: that Shough is the franchise signal caller.
“I’m a big fan of Tyler Shough,” Daniels said. “I truly think he’s the franchise guy for the Saints. I think they’ve found him.”
This is high praise coming from Daniels, someone who’s been around countless franchise quarterbacks. The current ESPN analyst knows the position, and sees a bright future for the second-year quarterback, especially after his early-season showings.

As every Saints fan knows, Shough had a tumultuous performance against the Lions, particularly in the opening half. However, he fought through the adversity and nearly completed a miraculous comeback. Daniels highlights this as a key reason why he believes Shough is the franchise quarterback.
“I was really impressed when he played the Lions. He really struggled in the first half, and that was to be expected, but brought the Saints back,” Daniels said. “His fourth quarter and overtime was outstanding. Like that to me, in a hostile environment on the road, you can go in there and get a win. I think he’s the guy for sure.”
Since then, Shough has continued to impress and further solidify himself as future. He’s second in the league with 662 passing yards and four touchdowns. Additionally, his only two interceptions came from the first half against Detroit.
Beyond that, Shough’s poise in the big moments has been evident. He’s best in game-deciding drives and rises to the occasion. He has a short memory and can seamlessly transition from a turnover to a long scoring drive.
These are the desired qualities of franchise quarterbacks and is something the Saints haven’t had since Drew Brees retired in 2020. Obviously, Shough isn’t at that level yet, it’s irrational to believe that, but he’s well on his way. He has the mentality; now he just needs the experience and IQ that comes with age.
Tyler Shough clearly established himself as not only the leader in the locker room, but also among the fanbase. Him receiving praise from Chase Daniels highlights his impressive play and bodes well for his future. It’s still early, but it appears the Saints found their future at quarterback.
