Shough struggled immensely during the first part of the game. The Saints were scoreless in their first eight drives, and he accounted for three turnovers (2 interceptions and one fumble). The offense wasn’t in rhythm, and he was missing easy throws.
As a result, the Saints fell behind 21-0. For most young quarterbacks, this would be the story of the game, and they’d begin preparing for next week. However, Shough’s not any ordinary quarterback and flipped the script.

Even the best quarterbacks struggle. What separates them from the competition is their ability to get back up, rebound, and lead their team. The Saints haven’t had someone who could do this since Drew Brees retired, which was a major reason for their lack of success. Shough’s showing in the second half proved he can do this and is capable of leading the team.
Shough ended the day throwing for 410 yards and three touchdowns, along with the aforementioned turnovers. He continuously got better throughout the game and calmly led the Saints on multiple game-tying drives. He was a different quarterback at the end of the game and looked far more comfortable, dissecting the defense on every drive.
Shough accurately targeted all three levels of the field, hitting Chris Olave on some deep shots, DeVaughn Vele on intermediate/goal line routes, and Juwan Johnson on crucial short passes. As a result, it stretched the Lions' defense and helped the Saints' offense gain momentum. They will battle against every team in the NFL if Shough can consistently do this.
This game epitomizes that the outcome isn’t everything. Ask most Saints fans, and they aren’t disappointed about the result; rather, they are excited about the growth and potential of the team, particularly at quarterback.
It’s a long season, but Tyler Shough is off to a strong start, despite an abysmal first half, and is establishing himself as the franchise cornerstone. He won’t always be perfect, but the Saints will be just fine if he stays composed and keeps fighting. Despite losing, Shough showed this ability and should make fans optimistic about the future.
