Drew Brees and Sean Payton are undeniably one of the premier head coach/quarterback duos in NFL history. As expected, Brees gave an emotional tribute to Payton during his Hall of Fame induction speech. Although they aren’t together anymore, New Orleans Saints fans can always reminisce on the good times.
“I saw myself as an extension of you (Sean Payton) on that field,” Brees said. “I always had something to prove to you, and I always wanted to make you right. I know you trusted me and allowed us both to be great.”
Brees noted how he and Payton were like-minded in his speech. The two spent countless hours in the film room, preparing and scheming for their upcoming game. They knew each other's thoughts and tendencies like the back of their hand. As a result, this created an electric pair that took the NFL by storm.

Brees and Payton rank in the top three in NFL history in wins by quarterback/head coach duo with 142. Their mixture of chemistry and trust in each other created one of the most high-octane offenses in history. During their tenure, Brees averaged 294.9 passing yards per game.
To put this into perspective, Matthew Stafford, the MVP and leading passer in 2025, averaged 276.9 per game. If Brees' average was extrapolated over the current 17 game season format, it would be average 5000 yards per season. Brees became quite familar with that in just 16 games.
As every Saints fan knows, this explosive offense culminated in them winning the 2009 Super Bowl. Additionally, Brees was a two-time Offensive Player of the Year, and Payton won the 2006 AP Coach of the Year. The two were perfect complements and were a pivotal reason why they took home the awards.
Saints fans were fortunate to reap the rewards of the dynamic duo between Drew Brees and Sean Payton from 2006-2020. Now that it’s over, it’s time to reminisce on the good times and appreciate the moments that were brought until the next tandem comes.
