After starting the season 2-0, the New Orleans Saints have gone on to lose seven straight games, the first time they've done so since 1999. Things are not going well for this team nor are they going well for Derek Carr, who returned to the lineup for the first time since the Saints' Week 5 loss to the Chiefs.
According to NFL Stats, Carr now has the unfortunate distinction of becoming the first quarterback in NFL history "to start in losses against 31 different teams." That is not a great stat to have attached to your name.
To make matters worse for Carr, the Saints play the Raiders, his former team, near the end of the regular season. If the Saints lose that one, he'll officially have started a loss against every team in the league. Double oof. This is assuming, of course, that Carr is still even the starter at that point of the season.
Maybe he gets injured again or maybe the Saints simply want to see what they have with their other quarterbacks on the roster as they enter a crucial offseason. They can get out of his contract this offseason and it'd make sense for them to do so considering the lackluster situation they're currently in.
Derek Carr is making the wrong kind of history for the Saints
The Saints decided to sign Carr during the 2023 offseason despite their cap situation not being great. The team has continued to try and win games despite not having a good financial situation and it hasn't worked out.
Now that the team is 2-7 and not going anywhere, it's time for this team to officially hit the reset button and rebuild. Blow this whole thing up and start over. It's going to take some time but at least they wouldn't be continuing to put resources into a team that isn't winning anything anytime soon.
Carr isn't the only problem for the Saints in 2024 and shouldn't be blamed for the 2-7 record (especially with him missing several games with an oblique injury) but he's certainly not helping anything. The injuries have been a problem for this team as well, which has made it hard for Carr as well.
At this point, with the trade deadline approaching, the Saints need to give up on this year and start building for the future.
