Dennis Allen gives positive health update for Derek Carr as Saints prepare for Week 9
The New Orleans Saints are trying to turn the page on their sixth straight loss. After falling to the Los Angeles Chargers 26-8 on Sunday, the Saints are now looking forward to their Week 9 matchup with the Carolina Panthers.
As that game approaches, New Orleans is feeling optimistic about welcoming back another key player. In Week 8, Chris Olave, Taysom Hill, Cesar Ruiz, and Pete Werner all returned to the lineup. Now, the Saints think they’ll be getting their starting quarterback back in Week 9.
Speaking with the media on Monday, head coach Dennis Allen announced Derek Carr will return to practice on Wednesday, and he’s optimistic that he’ll play Sunday.
Derek Carr on track to return for Saints in Week 9
Carr suffered an oblique injury at the end of the Week 5 game against the Kansas City Chiefs and has been sidelined since, missing the last three games. The veteran quarterback, who has developed a reputation for toughing his way through injuries, wasn’t able to play through the oblique injury, as it was described as a functional issue instead of a pain-tolerance issue.
Dennis Allen has been transparent about Carr’s return the entire time, circling Week 9 as the most likely date. Now, as New Orleans enters the game week, Carr is on track to get back on the field.
The Saints are hoping he can help them get back in the win column. While New Orleans is on a six-game losing streak, they are 2-3 in the games Carr started, and two of those losses came on last-second scores. New Orleans has displayed issues far bigger than the quarterback position, but having a healthy Carr back under center should definitely make a difference.
If he doesn’t have any setbacks, he’ll return against the team New Orleans started the year with. Back in Week 1, the Saints embarrassed Carolina 47-10. Since then, the Panthers have only picked up one win, but so have the Saints.
Carr and the team will need to pull together to play a quality game and pick up a win. Stacking one win at a time can turn this season around, but that all starts with getting a win on Sunday.
