New Orleans Saints fans had to hear all offseason about how Dennis Allen, their former head coach and defensive coordinator, was going to help turn the Chicago Bears defense around in 2025. It got old fast, to say the least.
Well, people might not be so high on Allen after his Bears defense got absolutely smoked by the Detroit Lions in Week 2, surrendering over 500 yards of total offense and 52 points. This was to a Lions offense that, by the way, looked inept in the first game of the season.
Allen was the Saints defensive coordinator from 2015 to 2021 and did a nice job in the role. He did such a good job that the Saints gave him another shot as a head coach after he failed in that role with the Raiders a decade prior.
It did not go well. Allen was fired halfway into the 2024 season and then the Bears brought him on to help turn their defense around in Ben Johnson's first year. While it's only two games and one would think Allen would be able to get things figured out there, it's still funny to see his unit give up over 50 points and 500 yards of offense.
Saints fans will enjoy Dennis Allen's defense getting torched
Allen helped the Saints defense turn into a pretty fierce unit during his time with the team but it's his tenure as a head coach that fans are going to be unforgiving for. Time after time, Allen made boneheaded decisions and never was the kind of leader the Saints needed him to be.
It wasn't surprising to see him get a defensive coordinator job somewhere considering how good he has proven to be in the role but so far, his Bears unit is not off to a good start. That is music to Saints fans' ears.
