No more pump fakes or maybes. New Orleans Saints fans got injury news they've been waiting to hear for a month. Neither Cam Jordan or Alvin Kamara have an injury designation on the injury report, so fans will get their first chance this year to see them when they take on the Baltimore Ravens.
We thought the two legends were headed that way before. Jordan mentioned he was feeling much better physically after sitting out for a month, and it felt like that was the first sign towards a return. Kamara looked like himself, making it was surprising that he didn't return for the opener.
Ultimately, neither player returned, and it showed in Week 1. Now Kamara and Jordan are returning at a point where Saints fans and the Saints' system could use their talents badly. The run game and pass rush are two places that struggled in Week 1, and they must improve in Week 2.
Saints clearly need Cam Jordan back after Week 1
Last week showed how much the Saints were missing Jordan's presence. The Saints pass rush left much to be desired, and that tends to happen when you're without one of your top two pass rushers. Jordan had 10.5 sacks a year ago, and Brandon Staley's comments of Jordan looking better than ever pre-injury creates hope he could do it again.
Goff was barely in any trouble last week. The Saints occassionally got pressure, but it didn't feel like anything that rattled Goff for an extended period of time. The team simply needs to fix it, and Jordan returning is a step in the right direction.
The Ravens are a dominant running team, so bringing Jordan back for this game could be an extremely impactful. Jordan has always been extremely vocal about his about his ability to play the run being something to highlight.
Jordan doesn't have the athleticism to corral Jackson in space, but he could still be part of remaining disciplined in his pass rush lane. It could be more about getting pressure for another player to clean up.
It's against Henry that Jordan will be the most impactful. As we've mentioned, Jordan is a phenomenal run stopper, and he'll need to set the edge well this week.
Stopping Henry is a tall task, as he's just as dangerous on the inside as he on the perimeter because of his rare blend of size and speed. The Saints would naturally have more help inside, and we’ve seen how Henry against a defensive back has gone numerous times in the past.
From a one on one perspective, Jordan is more than equipped in a battle against Henry. Edge defenders will get hands Henry before he's able to get a full head of steam. Jordan's size will make him a more likely candidate to win in a one on one situation.
