Cam Jordan thinks fans and players give way too much attention to sacks, to the point where Jordan believes it's the most overrated stat in football. The New Orleans Saints defensive end has a bunch of them, but he feels the treatment of sacks has overshadowed actual football. Prioritizing tape over stats isn't anything new, but Jordan took a new approach to the conversation.

Rather than just speaking to fans, he called out players and awards for overvaluing stats. Jordan knows some players focus on sacks over anything, and he also pointed to players winning awards, such as Defensive Player of the Year, despite being a liability in run defense.

Cam Jordan has been advocating for run defense

Cam Jordan has 132 sacks in his career. That’s the 17th most in NFL history, but it still doesn’t come off as the guy with a bunch of money who tells you money isn’t everything. That’s because this is a perfect quote to describe how Jordan views the game, and honestly, he is the perfect messenger in this case.

By the end of the season, Jordan could reside the top-10 all-time. That won’t change his sentiment. Jordan is all about stopping the run and being a complete player.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say Jordan takes greater pride in stopping the run than getting to the quarterback. If nothing else, he certainly thinks he's better in the run game than pass rush. He recently took time on social media to respond to a post about his career sack total by saying, "And!!! I’m better at playing the run!!"

That's why Jordan's words don't come off as hating. They come off as a player who legitimately believes fans and pundits are missing part of the game by ignoring run defense.

In his prime, the neglect of the run defense was prominent in how Jordan was discussed amongst his peers. If both run defense and pass rush were viewed equally, Jordan would have been discussed even more favorably than he was. It's what set him apart, but like his words point out, run defense is typically a distant second thought.
