New Orleans Saints fourth-round pick Bryce Lance continues his impressive offseason with another dominating performance in the Saints' joint practice against the Los Angeles Rams. The rookie is showcasing his chemistry with Tyler Shough and is establishing himself as a major contributor in the Saints’ offense, especially after Jordyn Tyson’s injury.
According to LouisianaSports.com's Ross Jackson, Lance caught all five of his targets from Shough and reeled in two touchdown passes on Thursday. Although he shined all over the field, his dominance downfield in contested-catch situations made headlines. Head coach Kellen Moore commented on this performance after practice.
“Good work,” Kellen Moore said. “Contested catches against really talented corners. These guys have some really good players on their defense. That was awesome for him.”
Bryce Lance must step up in the wake of Jordyn Tyson.
Tyson’s expected to miss approximately two months due to a hamstring injury, which creates a massive opportunity for Lance. He’s now arguably the third receiver on the depth chart and will see plenty of snaps during the season. It’s pivotal that he solidifies himself as a reliable target for Shough and helps compensate for Tyson’s missed production.
Because of this, Lance’s performance during joint practices and throughout training camp should encourage fans. Despite being a rookie, he looks comfortable in the offense and has already created chemistry with Shough. The two appear to be clicking and are already a dynamic tandem.
Lance’s skill set can open up the Saints’ offense and help create explosive plays. His prowess as a vertical, contested-catch threat will stretch the defense, allowing more space underneath for the offense to run. Additionally, he’s a dynamic option who can create downfield, game-changing plays for Kellen Moore. Even after Tyson comes back, Lance can still play a crucial role in the offense.
Obviously, it’s irrational to overreact from a training camp and joint practice. However, Bryce Lance has shown the potential to become an impactful player for the Saints during his rookie season, which is necessary after Jordyn Tyson’s injury. His being a consistent weapon for Tyler Shough is the key to unlocking their offense early in the year.
