The New Orleans Saints traded away wide receiver Rashid Shaheed during the NFL trade deadline, losing a major piece in their offense.  After his departure, the offense lacked a receiver that could consistently make plays outside of All-Pro Chris Olave and also make a splash move in the return game.

New Orleans made it a priority to reshape the roster with upgrades at the receiver position.   They brought in young talent throughout the 2026 NFL Draft, selecting three receivers out of eight of their selections.

The Saints used one of those selections with the potential to replace the void after Shaheed’s exit. They selected Barion Brown from LSU with pick number 190 in the sixth round.  Brown was a walking highlight reel that jumped off your television screen as both a receiver and kick returner.  He possess the ability to provide the Saints with elite, game-changing speed, playmaking ability, and deep threat in the offense.

New Orleans Saints could replace Rashid Shaheed at a much lower cost

Barion Brown had a very decorated college career, earning multiple accolades, During his time at Kentucky and LSU.  He was named a first team All-American in 2023, while also receiving both First and Second Team All-SEC honors.  He played a crucial role as a receiver and kick returner, recording with 175 receptions for 2,060 yards and 12 touchdowns, while also returning 66 kicks for 1,910 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Brown’s game breaking speed jumped out on film.  Whether he was returning kicks or running routes, there was always a possibility that he could make a game changing splash play.  His elite speed was put on display at the NFL combine, running an impressive 4.40 yard dash.  Even though his dash time didn’t rank amongst the top times, his game speed looks even faster on tape.

The Saints are getting a dynamic playmaker that can make an instant impact for them in both the passing game and special teams.  Brown has the physical tools and ability to fill in the role Shaheed held during his stint in New Orleans.  If Brown is able to reach his potential, the Saints could come away with a steal, as they will save $16 million annually over the next four seasons.
