The New Orleans Saints have hit rock bottom. That’s a statement that’s been uttered many times this season, but after falling 23-22 to the Carolina Panthers in Week 9, the franchise is at a new low. New Orleans now has the same record as Carolina, but for some reason, the Saints assumed they weren’t actually as bad as the Panthers.
Sunday’s game delivered the brutal reality of that not being the case at all, and New Orleans isn’t handling it well. Following the game, it was clear players were in disbelief and coming to terms with the reality of their season.
Among the interesting postgame moments were some eye-opening comments from Alvin Kamara. The star running back, who laid it all on the line for the Saints on Sunday, has never been one to mince words. That’s why everyone found it interesting when he seemingly took a swipe at the Saints coaching staff.
Kamara was asked about Tyrann Mathieu’s comment that the team may be losing confidence, and the veteran running back responded by saying he doesn’t think confidence is an issue among players. He went on to list several guys on the roster who he believes are incredibly confident player.
He then ended his statement by saying, “I think there’s confidence there (the players), but it might not be confidence in something else.” That’s what got everyone’s attention, because the people want to know what is the something else he’s referring to. The natural assumption is Kamara is talking about the coaching staff.
Alvin Kamara’s says players are confident, while seemingly questioning the coaches
For as honest and transparent as Kamara has been throughout his career, he’s unlikely to explicitly say the coaches are the problem. However, he’s never had an issue sending messages or holding everyone accountable in his comments. It seems like this could be the latest case of that.
If a shot at the coaching staff was what Kamara intended, he certainly has the support of all the fans. It’s been clear Saints fans want head coach Dennis Allen gone, and each week, he gives reasons that build their argument. He hasn’t been the only issue, though. Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has had some very questionable moments in recent weeks, and he too has become an issue.
Everything in New Orleans is falling apart, and the situation is beyond repair. The franchise needs to stop lying to itself and accept that it’s time for a rebuild.
