With the conclusion of Super Bowl 59, the New Orleans Saints can make it official and hire Kellen Moore as the next head coach of their franchise. Moore, fresh off a 40-22 drubbing of the Chiefs in Super Bowl 59, will remain in the Big Easy and get things moving for a franchise that desperately needs a facelift.
Now that the Saints have their next head coach, which players could be in trouble as the new regime moves in? Let's look at three Saints players whose futures could be in jeopardy now that Moore is taking over.
Derek Carr
Until it's announced that he's staying, Derek Carr is going to be under the microscope in 2025. For one, he hasn't played to the level that the Saints were hoping for when they signed him two years ago. He's also struggled to stay healthy.
That being said, getting rid of Carr would be an expensive move. They can use the post-June 1 designation but doing so wouldn't net the Saints $30 million until June 2 so they'd still be deep in salary cap hell if they decide to part ways with him.
Dianna Russini had previously reported that Moore might not want the Saints job because he wasn't impressed with the quarterback room but he did later clarify that he respects Carr. Even with that being the case, if Moore identifies a quarterback he'd rather have quarterbacking his new team and the Saints can get out from under Carr's contract, don't be shocked if Derek Carr is calling another city home this year.
Cam Jordan
To the Saints' credit, extending Cam Jordan ahead of the 2023 season was a move that helped their meager salary cap situation. Unfortunately, Jordan has played poorly since signing that extension, only notching six sacks over the past two years.
As much as Saints fans admire Jordan for all that he's done during his 14 years with the franchise, he's no longer the player he once was. That's a big reason why Kellen Moore's staff could decide to officially part ways with Jordan even if doing so wouldn't be cheap.
Be that as it may, Moore likely took the Saints job knowing that the team would have to make decisions like these. He knows that cutting Jordan will cost money but with the 14-year NFL veteran not playing great and costing the team more money than he's worth, simply cutting bait might be the way to go here.
Jamaal Williams
This one won't be a shock to anyone, as Jamaal Williams has done very little since inking a three-year deal worth $12 million in 2023. He rushed for just 470 yards and two touchdowns in two years (27 games) and has not been worth what the Saints paid for to bring him in.
This is made even worse when you look at the production Williams put up before joining the Saints. In 2022 with the Lions, Williams rushed for 1,066 yards and a whopping 17 touchdowns and that is not the kind of performance the Saints got from the veteran running back.
When looking at the running back position in New Orleans, the Saints are still getting solid production from Alvin Kamara but they'll need depth. That's hopefully where the draft comes into play for Moore and this team.
Williams was probably gone no matter what this offseason but having an offensive-minded guy come in as the head coach certainly spells doom for the veteran running back.
