The Saints might have burned a bridge between them and Jameis Winston with their pursuit of Watson, much like the Browns burned their bridge with Mayfield.

Josina Anderson reported on Thursday that the Saints had reached out to Winston, as had the Colts. Anderson mentioned that Winston views himself as a starter and that’s what role he’s looking for. This makes me wonder if New Orleans reached out to Winston to see if he’d be okay being a backup.

If the Saints were to bring Winston back for a third season, he wouldn’t be a backup. They have no better options on their roster as of now and unless they draft a quarterback early and he lights it up in the preseason, Winston would be the starter.

With Mitchell Trubisky signing with Pittsburgh and the Commanders trading for Carson Wentz, Winston’s market dried up pretty quickly and it feels like if the Saints miss out on Watson, he’ll be the one coming to the Big Easy. Fans would be okay with it considering his familiarity with the team and organization but things might be pretty awkward.

Even with that being the case, Jameis Winston feels like the best bet to be the New Orleans Saints’ quarterback in 2022.
