The New Orleans Saints have entered the halfway point of the 2021 season and so far, it’s been hit or miss. While the defense has played well, there are still holes on that side of the ball and the Saints need to address those holes in free agency.

Let’s check out five defensive free agents who would help spruce up NOLA’s D in 2022. As was the case with my offensive free agents article, I’m only considering players in New Orleans’ price range, so you won’t be seeing names like Chandler Jones or Von Miller on this list because this team can’t afford them.

Also, I’m aware that Marcus Williams is slated to hit free agency but I won’t be including him. I hope that the Saints retain him by way of an extension but it won’t come cheap.

Now, without further ado, let’s check out five defensive free agents that could really help out the New Orleans Saints in 2022.

5. Devin McCourty

If the Saints aren’t able to keep Marcus Williams in the Big Easy, they’ll need a safety capable of filling his shoes. While Devin McCourty isn’t the same clutch safety he once was, he’s still a very talented player and could help this Saints secondary a lot.

McCourty’s 62.2 PFF grade so far this season shows that he’s still a viable option in the secondary. He’ll turn 35 ahead of the 2022 season so the three-time Super Bowl champion should be a bargain on the free-agent market.

McCourty obviously isn’t the future for the Saints secondary but if Williams leaves, he’d be a nice stop-gap for the team.
