Saints Veterans Who to Show Something

1. Trevor Siemian

The inclusion of Trevor Siemian on this list represents something of a technicality, in that it is unlikely that the veteran quarterback will find himself part of the Saints’ opening day roster.

With the duo of Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston battling it out for the team’s top signal-caller spot, and rookie Ian Book impressing with his early camp performance, the path for Siemian to the 53-man roster in New Orleans is … perilous.

However, given the current state of play at the quarterback position in the NFL, it would make sense that a quarterback of Siemian’s caliber could be seen as auditioning for a reserve role on one of the league’s 31 other clubs.

Siemian, who owns a Super Bowl ring from his time as the understudy of newly-enshrined NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning in Denver, was once hailed as the heir apparent to Manning. Siemian stepped in as the Broncos’ quarterback upon Manning’s departure, starting 14 games as a second-year pro in 2016 and 11 games in an injury-shortened 2017 season, passing for 5,686 yards and 30 touchdowns in the process.

Though Siemian last started an NFL game early in the 2019 season, his solid-if-unspectacular style of play and veteran presence led him to New Orleans late last season as a bulwark against catastrophe at the position in light of injury to Drew Brees.

Though – barring injury to the team’s top three quarterbacks – Siemian’s time with the Saints appears set to expire, he may nonetheless have the opportunity to play his way onto an NFL roster.

These New Orleans Saints have to show something on Saturday. Maybe not in order to find a place on the Saints’ roster but to help them land elsewhere should they get cut during the preseason.
