The New Orleans Saints haven’t had much go their way this summer and it was shocking when Patrick Robinson announced his retirement from the NFL. This isn’t good news for the Saints but it’s great news for UDFA cornerback Bryce Thompson, who now has a chance to make the 53-man roster.

The Saints signed Thompson as an undrafted free agent and he’s looked impressive in training camp. Thompson going undrafted was a bit surprising considering how talented he was at Tennessee, where he hauled in eight interceptions over the course of three years.

Fortunately for New Orleans though, Thompson did go undrafted and now the kid has a real shot to not only make the team but play a pivotal role.

Thompson won’t be a starter by any means and as of now, he’s fourth in line on the depth chart per Our Lads, sitting behind Marshon Lattimore, Prince Amukamara, and Ken Crawley.

New Orleans Saints fans should keep an eye on Bryce Thompson

As of now, the starters are more than likely going to be Lattimore, Brian Poole, and rookie Paulson Adebo, who has been pushed into the starting role with Robinson’s sudden retirement. Lattimore might be suspended to start the season, which means Thompson could see more significant playing time during those games Lattimore misses.

Preseason will be a huge opportunity for Thompson to show what he can do. Yes, he’ll probably be going up against third-string and fourth-string players when he’s on the field but he has to make the most of those opportunities.

Cornerback is definitely a position where the Saints could use as much help as possible this year and Thompson could once again prove how good this organization is at finding undrafted talents.
