The New Orleans Saints visited with Kwon Alexander on Tuesday and as of this writing, no deal has been reached between the two. There hasn’t been any news since the initial announcement of the two meeting and that could be good or bad news.

If the Saints aren’t able to land Alexander, they still would be wise to add a linebacker in free agency. Demario Davis is a freak of nature on the field but he’s at his best when there’s a linebacker able to help him get to that form.

As of now, Zack Baun and Pete Werner are the two options to have at linebacker and that’s not an ideal situation considering Baun is coming off a lackluster year and Werner is a rookie.

If the Saints aren’t able to sign Alexander and decide to enter the linebacker well before training camp, here are three options for them to consider.

Linebackers for Saints to Consider – No. 3: Avery Williamson

One of the premier trade targets during the 2020 season was inside linebacker Avery Williamson, who was a tackling machine for the Jets. He ended up getting sent to Pittsburgh where he finished out the 2020 season.

Williamson finished the 2020 season with 111 total tackles, two quarterback hits, and one sack while also recording an interception. Those numbers are from his entire 2020 season and not just with one of the two teams he played for last year.

Williamson is a great tackler and that’s exactly what the Saints’ linebacker unit needs. It’s surprising that he’s still available at this point of the offseason, as training camp is next week and Williamson is a proven talent in the league. He tore his ACL following the 2019 season and dropped off a bit, but not much in all honesty.

Perhaps the issue is that inside linebacker isn’t a huge need for teams but hey — The Saints should capitalize on that and ink him to a deal.

At just 29 years old, Williamson has plenty left in the tank and the Saints should give his agent a call if they can’t come to an agreement with Kwon Alexander.
