New Orleans Saints to Protect – No. 9: Marcus Williams

Putting Marcus Williams this low on the list might seem odd but it’s not a knock on him, trust me. Williams being listed at No. 8 is mostly because the safety position doesn’t require superstars to play it.

With that said, Williams is one of the best safeties in the league and the Saints should make it a point to extend him before the season if at all possible. To non-Saints fans, he might be remembered as the guy who let Stefon Diggs slip past him in the playoffs years ago, but he’s more than proven himself since then.

If a new team were to enter the league and had a chance to nab a safety in the expansion draft, Williams would be at the top of their list if he was made available. The Saints couldn’t risk losing him, even if he will hit free agency after this season.

Without Williams, the Saints’ secondary takes a massive hit and they wouldn’t let him get snatched up while he’s still under contract.
