Derek Carr is preparing for his second season with the New Orleans Saints, and while he’ll be learning a new system since Klint Kubiak is now the offensive coordinator, stakes are higher than ever for Carr. Coming off an underwhelming first season with the Saints, Carr knows that his performance this season will have a big impact on the rest of his career.

Everyone actually knows that’s the case. That’s why in a recent Bleacher Report piece, looking at quarterbacks who are under the most pressure in 2024, Maurice Moton had Derek Carr as the first name of the list.

Moton detailed all of the current circumstances in New Orleans, pointing out how the team has drafted quarterbacks in the mid rounds of the last two drafts, how the Saints haven’t seen the playoffs in three years, and how Dennis Allen’s job security is riding on how the team finishes the 2024 season. Moton explained that all of those things are tied to how Carr performs this season.

If Derek Carr can put together a good season, the Saints will probably return to the playoffs, Allen will remain head coach, and Carr will continue to be the quarterback in New Orleans. However, if Carr has an underwhelming season , expect big changes to come to the Saints, starting with the franchise moving on from Allen and Carr.

In 2023, Carr’s first year in New Orleans, he started all 17 games, completing 68.4% of his passes for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions. While that isn’t a bad stat line, it wasn’t enough, as the Saints finished 9-8, a win shy of winning the division and going to the playoffs.

New Orleans knows it needs to have more success. If the franchise can’t reach that success with the current group it has this year, expect the Saints to hit the reset button. That means moving on from high-paid veterans like Carr. However, that can all be avoided if Carr and the Saints deliver in 2024.
