Derrick Kelly

The 25-year-old Florida State alum, Derrick Kelly cracked the roster over Patrick Omameh, an offensive lineman that played 14 games with the Saints a season ago. Omameh played 15% of the team’s snaps in 2019.

Kelly’s addition is part of the Saints move towards a younger generation of stars. They have young talent at almost every position. But, given their injury on the line last season and most likely again in 2020, it’s surprising that Omameh didn’t get the spot.

“Blocked for an offense ranked third in the ACC and 28th in the country in passing offense (270.1 ypg.) as senior…Started all 13 contests as junior, opening games at both left tackle and left guard…Helped Seminoles offense top 400-yard mark five times,” neworleanssaints.com has in Kelly’s bio.

Ethan Greenidge and Derrick Kelly will be at the bottom of the depth chart as Nick Easton will be the top backup lineman. The Saints’ 6-foot-5 Kelly didn’t see any snaps in the NFL in 2019 after going undrafted in 2018.

He was on the Saints’ practice squad last season. His potential is apparently there as the team opted to keep him, but given their lack of depth and injury concerns, it’ll be interesting to see if Kelly makes an on-field appearance in 2020.
