The New Orleans Saints trimmed their roster down to just 53 players on Saturday, and the plethora of moves came with a few surprises.

From 80 to 53, the New Orleans Saints trimmed their roster on Saturday. While some moves were made prior to the deadline, the bulk of the Saints roster transactions were made Saturday, and then the practice squad was filled out on Sunday.

The team was able to retain players like seventh-round draft pick Tommy Stevens and veteran wide receiver Bennie Fowler on their practice squad.

This season, the Saints will be able to activate two of those practice squad members on game day to make for a full 55 players on the roster. That was an adjustment that’ll be in play for the first time this year.

The practice squad, which was already set to increase from 10 to 12, has been again lifted to 16 to help with any potential players put on the Covid-19 list. That allowed the Saints to deepen the pool that they can choose for those gameday additions.

However, some of those players on the practice squad could’ve made the initial 53-man roster. With any roster trimming, we were surprised by some of the players cut. That said, we were also surprised by some of the players retained.

Let’s dive into three of them.
