Young struggling coaches around the league

In the 2019 offseason, it seemed as if a coach had a cup of coffee with Sean McVay and was in consideration for a head coaching position, that chances were good that they got the head coaching job.

The 34-year-old Sean McVay took over the league by storm in 2018 by leaving NFL fans in awe with his young age and flexing his powered offense to secure a Super Bowl berth.

When some NFL teams went looking for a new coach in the 2019 offseason, they didn’t lock in on coaches who had the most coaching experience, but coaches who held strong coaching connections to Sean McVay.

Zac Taylor was the quarterback’s coach for the Los Angeles Rams under Sean Mcvay, and he got hired the last offseason to be the new head coach for the Cincinnati Bengals. Not only did Andy Dalton have by his worst performance last year, but the Bengals were also the worst team in league with two wins to show for it.

Zac Taylor wasn’t the only failing coach last year who moved up ranks quickly to become an NFL head coach by having a strong connection with Sean McVay.

More from Who Dat Dish

Kliff Kingsbury, head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, holds a strong connection to Sean McVay and almost took a consultant role with the Rams over USC. Kliff Kingsbury had a rough outing in 2019 as his team finished with a 5-10-1 record.

Last offseason, Sporting News reported how Sean Payton said that he believed that teams were making a mistake by hiring young, unproven coaches with barely any coaching experience.

Ironically, during the Saints-Cardinals week eight matchup, the young Kliff Kingsbury made a terrible coaching decision in a close ball game by going for it on 4th and 1.

The worst part is that they tried running up the middle against arguably the best run defense in the NFL. The Cardinals got stonewalled, and the Saints took over on downs, which led to a touchdown drive and Saints Victory.

These young NFL coaches have high expectations going into year two, and chances aren’t good if coaches like Kliff Kingsbury and Zac Taylor struggle this year and stick around their current organizations next offseason.

There’s a motto for NFL players and coaches, and the motto is “Not For Long.” Eight NFL coaches got fired in the 2018 offseason and five NFL coaches got fired this off-season.

If Dennis Allen continues his strong coaching on the defense for one of the league’s premier teams, there should be interviews lined up next off-season for the experienced NFL coach who’s been through the up and downs.
