Drew Brees said he’s not sure when a new deal will be reached with the New Orleans Saints in an interview with ESPN Radio.

New Orleans Saints fans are still waiting on news of a Drew Brees extension, which will not only clear cap space for the team but also guarantee the star quarterback finishes his career in the Big Easy.

Drew Brees talked with ESPN Radio Baton Rouge Monday afternoon and discussed the current contract situation.

“I’ve got, obviously, a very strong relationship with the Saints,” Brees said.  “Talks are ongoing, and I don’t know if that is something that will be done next week or before the end of the year, or next year or when. But obviously, I want to be a Saint for the rest of my career, and I think I’ve got a lot of good years left.”

“Of course I’m involved, but I have my agent for a reason. That’s his job, and so I allow him to do his job. Despite what might be portrayed as far as the business aspect of it for all players and all teams, listen, it’s a negotiation, so there’s always back-and-forth. I will allow them to take care of that. But I will only report when something is done.”

If you remember, head coach Sean Payton spoke at the NFL Scouting Combine last month, expressing his confidence that a deal with Drew Brees will get done.

“I go to bed thinking about improving our defense,” Payton told NFL Network in February. “I don’t mean to skirt, but I just know there will be an extension (for Drew Brees) and I know things will get worked out. I know where he’s at, and his mindset and his competitive nature of wanting to be successful. And I know, without speaking for him, both of us feel like there’s still more success to be had.”

At the moment, the Saints are set to pay Drew Brees $30 million in 2016 — the NFL’s biggest cap hit for any player this year.  At 37-years-old, Brees continues to play at an elite level.  Leading the league in passing for an NFL-record sixth time in 2015 while missing a game proved that.
