The New Orleans Saints have made their first of two selections in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, taking Tennessee-Chattanooga outside linebacker Davis Tull.

Sean Payton and company continue to bolster up their defense with what I believe to be a solid pick on day three for the Who Dat Nation.

So what does Davis Tull bring to the New Orleans Saints?

Hard work pays off for sure, and Tull has displayed that well as a four-year starter and three-time Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He excelled at both the run and pass rush as a senior, displaying outstanding strength, great hand usage, excellent pursuit, speed and explosiveness off the snap.  I see him as a great value pick for the Saints who could have easily gone to another team on day two.

From GoMocs.com:

"CHATTANOOGA:  Three-time Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year … first Moc to win three league player of the year honors … first defensive player to three-peat in the SoCon since Appalachian State’s Dexter Coakley took the award three times from 1994-96 … two-timeAcademic All-American …  first Academic All-American in program history … three-time All-American … only the second Moc in the school’s DI history to earn three All-American honors … SoCon all-time leader with 37.0 career sacks … second among active players in the FCS for career sacks (37.0) and first in TFLs (60.0) … second among active players in career forced fumbles (10) … three-time Capital One Academic All-District and three-time Academic All-SoCon … fourth all-time in sacks in NCAA FCS history … started all 48 games of his career, school-record for games started … invited to the NFL Scouting Combine.2014 • SENIOR SEASON:SoCon Defensive Player of the Year by the league’s coaches and media …AFCA All-American … first team All-American by the Associated Press and Sports Network … third team by College Sports Madness and  Beyond Sports Network … 12th in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award given to the national defensive player of the year …  led the SoCon with 18.0 TFLs and 10.5 sacks … drew six holding penalties … CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American … CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District … Academic All-SoCon … set SoCon career sack record with 1/2-sack at TTU… tied the SoCon sack record with a 1/2-sack against Wofford … finished with seven tackles and 2.0 TFLs … sack and a FR at Western Carolina … six tackles and 1.5 sacks against Mercer … six tackles and a sack against The Citadel’s triple-option attack … seven tackles, including two TFLs and a sack at Tennessee …  four tackles with two sacks and three hurries against Samford …  SoCon Defensive Player of the Weekand Sports Network National Defensive Player of the Week after a career-high 4.0 TFLs vs. Samford … two sacks and tied a career-high with three QBHs … also forced a fumble … three tackles, including a sack and one for loss at APSU … also forced a fumble … made six tackles, one TFL, blocked a FG and had a QBH at Central Michigan … Consensus preseason All-American … preseason SoCon Defensive Player of the Year."

Davis Tull adds good value to the New Orleans Saints linebacking corps.  He is a guy who could come in and compete for playing time on day one.  The Black and Gold were a severe disappointment a season ago, so adding Hull is a smart move.  New Orleans added Fresno State defensive tackle Tyeler Davison to close at their fifth round.

Saints picks though five rounds:

1 (13): Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford
1 (31): Stephone Anthony, ILB, Clemson
2 (44): Hau’oli Kikaha, OLB, Washington
3 (75): Garrett Grayson, QB, Colorado State
3 (78): P.J. Williams, CB, Florida State
5 (148): Davis Tull, OLB, Tennessee-Chattanooga
5 (154): Tyeley Davison, DT, Fresno State
