With the Saints mandatory minicamp coming to an end, the quarterback position the Saints quarterback battle remains the topic of discussion. The Saints are currently searching for their franchise quarterback, and it could possibly be in house. The starting quarterback vacancy became available when Derrick Carr unexpectedly retired back in May.
The Saints quarterback competition comes down to Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough, who continue to battle for the starting position. Both quarterbacks made great impressions during mandatory minicamp and continue to make the starting quarterback selection a difficult choice to make for the Saints coaching staff.
Tyler Shough had a pleasant minicamp showing
Tyler Shough was selected at pick number 40 of the 2025 NFL Draft. Many believe that he will win the starting job due to being picked so high and personally selected by head coach Kellen Moore. The Saints definitely see potential in Shough, and he will have the opportunity to prove he is worthy of the selection during training camp in August.
So far, Shough has shown why the Saints selected him so early. He finished minicamp and organized team activities 42/59 for four touchdowns, one interception, and a possible rushing touchdown, per Louisianasports.net's Ross Jackson. Jackson also noted "Shough has shown flashes with his big play potential." He has displayed his elite arm this offseason and, most notably, connected on multiple deep shots.
Spencer Rattler shows his confidence in Saints minicamp
Spencer Rattler is entering his second season in the NFL. His rookie season was one that he would love to forget. Rattler started in 6 games throwing for 1,317 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. He also finished with a PFF grade of a 52.0. The Saints finished 0-6 in games that he suited up in a a starter. Despite Rattler's poor statistics some believe that Rattler has the upper hand in the quarterback battle due to his NFL experience. Rattler is looking to prove that his struggles and inconsistencies from his rookie season are put to bed.
Rattler also had a strong mini camp, showing off his decisiveness and aggressiveness. "Rattler has shown his speed up clock, quick decision-making and aggressive style". Shough finished the offseason 45/59 for six or seven touchdowns and one interception, per Jackson. Rattler has looked very confident and is looking to carry this momentum into training camp, as the quarterback competition will continue in August.
