New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough hasn’t played up to his standards lately. Facing two formidable defenses plays a role, but one worrisome factor looms: Shough’s ability against pressure. He struggled against this in college, but quickly improved his rookie season. Now, it appears to be back.
This isn’t entirely on Shough. The offensive line needs to improve its blocking, especially from the tackles. Asim Richards has been a liability and must rebound for Shough's sake and the Saints' season.
The second-year quarterback has been immaculate when kept upright, throwing for 1,012 yards, nine touchdowns, and only two interceptions on nearly 73% completion. However, he’s struggled otherwise, completing 49% of his passes for 431 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. These issues have been especially pressing in the Saints’ recent games against the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants.
Tyler Shough faces another test in the pressure-heavy Steelers.
The Steelers don’t blitz often, ranking 19th in the NFL at 26.4% according to Sharp Football Analysis. However, they are among the most dangerous defensive lines with 16 sacks (top-10). Because of this, Shough will be tested and develop in his weakest area.
Pittsburgh’s talented defensive line is highlighted by former Defensive Player of the Year TJ Watt, who leads the team with 4.5 sacks. Behind him, explosive options like Alex Highsmith (3), Nick Herbig (2), and Derrick Harmon (1.5) await. It’s a deep group that always has dynamic players available.
It’s irrational to assume that the Saints’ offensive line will dominate this unit. The best-case scenario is that they contain them. So, the responsibility falls on Shough to make the leap.
As aforementioned, the same collegiate for Shough problems are emerging now; he’s sped up and is making errant decisions. It’s pivotal that he stays composed and makes the safe decision, even if it’s throwing the ball away. He must limit negative plays and stay turnover-free.
Luckily for him, Kellen Moore can make Shough's job easier. His scheming up quick passes, whether it’s a screen, a checkdown, or a quick hitch, will give Shough a safety net. These routes will be available, even against an uber-talented Pittsburgh secondary.
Anything can happen, but this game could be decided by one play, one moment, one lapse. The difference mustn’t come from a Tyler Shough error while he’s pressured. He’s struggled in recent weeks, but all it takes is one strong performance to silence the questions.
