Juwan Johnson just had the best year of his career, and Tyler Shough still feels like there's another level the tight end could reach. If Shough is correct and Johnson hits that new level, the New Orleans Saints offense could be terrifying in 2026.
Shough said Johnson is one of two Saints who don't get enough credit, and that's an easy point to stand with. He had some of the best stats among all tight ends, and that is rarely discussed. Shough's take got bold the further he went along.
When detailing why Johnson is underrated, Shough said, "he's due for a huge year. He had a record setting last year. I feel like we haven’t really done anything what he’s capable of. I’m really fired up for him because he’s different. His speed, his catching ability, his ability to separate is pretty tough.Â
Tyler Shough may believe in Juwan Johnson, but the Saints offense may not allow his bold take
Let's put traits to the side for the moment, and focus on what Shough said about Johnson's production. If he's due for a big year, what was last year? A teaser?
Johnson had 77 catches and 889 yards. The one place he didn't produce in the end zone, so maybe Shough is speaking to Johnson's ability to grow into a greater scoring threat. Getting more yards and catches is going to be difficult.
It's always impact over stats, but a lot of times stats can be a good way to estimate impact. In Johnson's case, his stats may be limited due to new acquisitions.
It's hard to see Johnson going for 900 yards with Jordyn Tyson added to the mix and Devaughn Vele being in the game plan all season long. Additionally, there should be a larger focus on running the football with the pick up of Travis Etienne.
Chris Olave and Tyson will probably be the two leading receivers, health permitting. It's just more talent in the room that should contribue to Johnson seeing the ball less.
Johnson could still use the speed, separation and catching ability to impact the game, but saying there's more the Saints could do with him is a bold take statistically. If he does do it, the Saints will have one of the most high octane offenses in the league.
