Plenty of people were happy that David Edwards signed with the New Orleans Saints, with Edwards himself calling it the "right and perfect decision."
The former Buffalo Bill and Los Angeles Ram said that there is a lot of familiarity in New Orleans and that it helped make the process seamless. He also said that there is a tradition of success in the city that made it an easy decision. "There's a long history of winning and great people. That's the common theme I've heard being in this building," he said in an interview with Erin Summers. "Pair that with the familiarity with people here, I just thought it was the right decision for me and my family."
Edwards signed a four-year, $61 million contract with the Saints last week. One of the top free agents on the market, the Saints hope to hit a home run with this signing. They do have a young quarterback to protect, after all. However, Edwards can help out more players than just Tyler Shough.
David Edwards brings useful experience with him to New Orleans
David Edwards might not have many postseason awards or accolades, but he still brings a ton of experience with him to the Saints. All of which has the potential to be really useful for the team, to say the least. Edwards has worked with both Super Bowl MVP Matthew Stafford and MVP Josh Allen. Now Edwards gets the opportunity to protect a potential third straight franchise quarterback in Tyler Shough.
The word "potential" is also something that Shough will probably need Edward's help in removing. Sacked 31 times in just nine starts last season, some blocking on the interior should help him be even better in 2026. Shough isn't the only rookie Edwards can aide. He'll play right next to Kelvin Banks Jr., who was one of the better rookies last year. Having an established player next to him should help Banks' development.
Edwards says that he wants to establish himself before anything else. "I want to be able to gain friendship and trust, and then from there build within that," he said to Erin Summers. "I'm hoping to be a leader alongside Eric McCoy, Cesar Ruiz, and the guys who have been here a while... whatever we do, we do together."
