David Edwards signed with the New Orleans Saints and requested the locker directly next to Tyler Shough. That signifies an initial belief, and Shough has delivered on that belief since the signing.

Edwards started by complimenting Shough’s intelligence after practice. He detailed a situation in which the Saints were running a drill and had a less than ideal look for the play. Shough changed the play to a more favorable call. “For a second year guy to have the level of understanding and mastery, it’s pretty special,” Edwards told reporters

Edwards followed up by looking at the physical component of Shough's game. No example this time. The new signee kept it simple. "He's got all the tools to be a really special player."

Observations about Tyler Shough hit different from David Edwards

When hearing praise or criticism about anything, it’s important to vet the source. It doesn’t mean to fully discount or blindly accept, but it can sometimes give a baseline of how to receive the commentary. For Edwards, his track record with quarterbacks makes his thoughts on Shough hold more weight.

Edwards has played with Jared Goff, Matthew Stafford and Josh Allen. It’d be one thing if he just played with one of them, but Edwards playing with all three gives him an array of what successful quarterbacks look like.

Stafford and Allen are much different quarterbacks on the surface with one commonality being powerful arms. Each have had a high level of success. The reason why goes beyond just arm talent and athleticism. It ties into preparation and the mental side of the game.

Edwards has a better idea than most on what that looks like. Some players encounter one of these types of quarterbacks. Edwards has seen three. The amount is important because only having one reference to compare to leads to framing success to look exactly like one player. Edwards has seen multiple processes lead to success.

In other words, it doesn’t need to look like Brees to feel like success is coming. Edwards knowing the general principles of successful quarterbacks creates more optimism when he sees the same traits in Shough that he saw in Allen, Goff and Stafford.
