New Orleans Saints running back Travis Etienne is no stranger to learning an offense. In fact, this year it'll be his third different system in a five-year career. However, what might be a daunting task to some isn't at all like that for the Jennings, La., native.
Etienne says that he just has to apply himself. "It’s football at the end of the day. There’s not much you can change; they change the names of things, but it’s still all the same things. I’ve been playing for quite some time now. Just being able to learn different offenses over the past years, I feel like my mental capacity is much more than what I can withstand," he said to the media following OTAs. "It’s like I go home, study the playbook, come here (the team facility in Metairie), and do what coach asks."
That self-driven approach has driven Etienne throughout his career. Consistently leaning on his preparation rather than panicking, his production has followed him through every season. Hopefully for the Who Dat Nation, it keeps following him around.
Travis Etienne could bring some explosions to the Superdome in 2026
Well, what if he's asked for more explosive plays? He's certainly shown that he can bring them, being one of just three players in the NFL with 500-plus rushing yards and 250-plus receiving yards each season. The other two are his fellow running backs, Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs. Some esteemed company, there: A former NFL-MVP and then a multi-time Pro Bowler.
"Explosives happen when we have all 11 guys playing as one. When you have the offensive lineman on the same page, when you have receivers blocking downfield, that’s when you have them. It’s a total team effort to be able to spring me loose."
Etienne's not saying that the explosives won't be frequent or anything like that. He was just explaining how/what all goes into those plays. It's something he's been known to do, because since his first full season in 2022, he's one of three players in the NFL with 500-plus rushing yards and 250-plus receiving yards each season. The other two are his fellow running backs, Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs. Some esteemed company, there.
