Stop me if you've heard this before, but former New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has once again teased a possible return to the NFL. Although this time, he seems slightly less eager to pull a Tom Brady and unretire.
He implied as much in an interview on Good Morning Football. "I never say never,” Carr said. “It would take a special situation. There were multiple teams that reached out to me this offseason. I won’t say who or how, but they reached out and were gauging my interest in what I wanted to do. They were good, solid football teams.”
Let's be honest here. With this being what feels like the millionth time since his unexpected retirement that he's talked about returning, the narrative is getting annoying for Saints fans. They all saw what the team was feeling like during that era, and the team nearly imploded. If he does return, it likely won't be a reunion. Bridges have been burned, and others have already been built. Despite the burnt bridges, there is still another reason why Carr won't return to New Orleans: Tyler Shough.
The Saints now have the Tyler Shough factor
Despite the burnt bridges, there is still another reason why Carr won't return to New Orleans: Tyler Shough. With him, the Saints honestly have no real reason to give Derek Carr a phone call.
With Shough, the peculiar way Carr went about things is also insanely evident. One has easily connected with the city; the other barely even tried. One actually meshes with his teammates; the other didn't. It's an intriguing spot to be at, especially when Shough was supposed to learn from Carr himself before ever playing a snap.
But if we fast forward from then and look at it now, it's hard to remember that that was a legitimate possibility. Over the past few months, including the nine starts he had, Shough has become the new star quarterback in town. At the rate he's at, he'll be a team captain. The future is now, and it's safe to say that the Derek Carr era is way back in the rearview mirror.
There's even a full-circle moment for the Saints quarterback's journey later this year. In October, the Black and Gold will return to Met Life stadium for the first time since Carr's career ending injury. Hopefully this time, it doesn't feature a Saints quarterback dive-bombing over a defender.
